Cartridge or disposable: two different tools

A cartridge is a small tank of cannabis oil that screws onto a separate, reusable battery, replaced once it runs empty. A disposable is a sealed, all-in-one unit with the oil and battery built together, used until it is empty and then discarded. Both deliver vapor rather than smoke.

Cartridges make sense for someone who plans to keep using vapes regularly, since the battery is reused across multiple cartridges over time. The upfront setup is a bit more involved: a battery, a charger, and knowing your cartridge’s thread type.

Disposables trade that setup for simplicity. There is no separate battery to charge or match, no threading to check, just a sealed device that works out of the box and gets tossed once it is spent.

Cost tends to work out differently between the two over time as well, since a reusable battery is a one-time purchase spread across many cartridges, while a disposable bundles hardware and oil into a single-use price each time.

Full-spectrum versus distillate, explained simply

Distillate is cannabis oil refined down to mostly a single compound, filtering out most of the plant’s other natural components. Full-spectrum oil keeps more of those components intact through a gentler extraction process. Both are legal, tested formats, and the choice comes down to personal preference.

Distillate tends to have a more neutral taste since much of the plant’s natural flavor compounds are stripped out during refinement. Full-spectrum oil generally carries more of the original plant’s flavor and aroma because less is removed.

Neither format is inherently better than the other. Product listings on the menu note which type a given cartridge or disposable is, so you can pick based on what you are looking for.

Some shoppers find distillate’s consistency appealing precisely because it is more uniform batch to batch, while others prefer full-spectrum for the closer connection to how the source flower actually tasted and smelled.

What’s inside a licensed Ohio vape cartridge?

A licensed Ohio vape cartridge contains cannabis oil extracted and processed by a state-licensed processor, tested by a state-approved lab for contaminants and verified against its label before it can be sold. That oversight runs through the Ohio Division of Cannabis Control, the same body that licenses every dispensary in the state.

That testing requirement is part of the seed-to-sale framework put in place when licensed adult-use sales began in Ohio in August 2024, following voter approval of Issue 2 in November 2023.

Hardware basics: batteries, threading, and charging

Most vape cartridges use a standard 510 thread, meaning they screw onto most compatible batteries regardless of brand. Batteries typically charge over USB and some let you adjust voltage to change the intensity of each pull. Check a cartridge’s packaging if you are unsure of its thread type.

When a vape doesn’t seem to be working

A weak or dead battery is the most common reason a cartridge stops hitting well, even when the oil inside is far from empty. Before assuming a cartridge is bad, trying a fresh or fully charged battery is worth doing first, since it solves the problem more often than not.

Threading mismatches are the next most common issue. If a cartridge does not screw on smoothly or sits loosely, double-check that both the cartridge and battery use a standard 510 thread rather than a proprietary connector.

For disposables, once the built-in battery runs down, the device is finished even if some oil technically remains, since there is no way to recharge or refill it. That is the tradeoff for skipping the separate-battery setup entirely.
