Why shoppers reach for pre-rolls first

Pre-rolls remove the two steps that slow flower down: grinding and rolling. For a first dispensary visit, a quick pickup between errands, or anyone who never learned to roll well, a pre-roll is the simplest way to get from purchase to smoking with nothing extra required.

That convenience is the whole pitch. A jar of flower asks something of you before you can use it: a grinder, rolling papers, some practice. A pre-roll skips straight to the part where you strike a match.

It also travels well. A pack of pre-rolls fits in a pocket, splits easily between a couple of people, and does not require pulling out a grinder in someone else’s living room.

For a first dispensary visit specifically, a pre-roll takes one more variable out of the equation. There is no wrong way to roll it, since that part is already done.

Single sticks or multi-packs: what’s the difference?

Single pre-rolls are sold individually, usually built from one strain, and suit someone who wants to try a cultivar without committing to a full jar. Multi-packs bundle several joints together, often from the same strain, at a lower per-joint cost, and suit regular smokers or sharing among a group.

Singles are also the easier way to sample something new. If a strain catches your eye on the menu but you are not ready to buy a full jar of flower, a single pre-roll is a lower-commitment way to try it.

Multi-packs make more sense once you already know what you like. Buying several joints of a familiar strain at once means fewer trips back to the counter.

Some multi-packs mix strains rather than sticking to one, which is worth checking on the product listing if variety matters more to you than sticking with a single cultivar across a whole pack.

What goes into a pre-roll besides flower?

A standard pre-roll is ground flower rolled in paper, nothing more. Some are finished with a filter tip for easier handling and airflow, while infused pre-rolls add concentrate or kief on top of the ground flower for a different product entirely, covered separately on our infused pre-rolls page.

The rolling paper itself varies by brand: some use hemp paper, others rice paper, and the packaging usually notes which. If paper type matters to you, check the product description on the menu or ask at the counter.

Standard pre-rolls and infused pre-rolls sit in different sections of the menu for a reason. If you want ground flower and nothing else, standard pre-rolls are the category to browse.

Are pre-rolls held to the same testing standard as flower?

Yes. Pre-rolls sold in Ohio go through the same state-approved lab testing as any other cannabis product before they reach a dispensary shelf, screened for contaminants and confirmed against their label. Licensing and oversight run through the Ohio Division of Cannabis Control.

That testing requirement applies to every licensed dispensary in Ohio, not just The Garden. It is part of the seed-to-sale system put in place when licensed adult-use sales began in August 2024, following voter approval of Issue 2 in November 2023.

How fresh is a pre-roll by the time you buy it?

Pre-rolls are packaged shortly after rolling and typically stay fresh for a reasonable stretch if kept sealed and out of direct light. Once a package is opened, exposure to air starts to dry the joint out faster, the same way it would affect loose flower left uncovered.

If you are buying a multi-pack to smoke over several days rather than in one sitting, keeping the unused joints in their original packaging, or moving them to an airtight container, slows that drying process down.

A pre-roll that has dried out still smokes, it just burns faster and can taste harsher than a fresher one. If a joint from a recent purchase seems off, storage after purchase is usually the reason, not the product itself.
