The short version

Richland Source reported on November 14, 2025 that King City Gardens planned The Garden Mansfield at 1099 W. Fourth St., in a building another cannabis company had remodeled but never licensed. The city signed off on zoning October 3; a provisional state license and certificate of operation were still to come.

What Richland Source reported

Carl Hunnell's story is a checklist. The building at 1099 W. Fourth St. had been bought and remodeled earlier in 2025 by Backroad Wellness, which never got its state license. King City Gardens took over the space and planned only cosmetic and branding changes.

Hunnell then checks the record. Mansfield council had voted 5 to 3 the year before to allow up to three dispensaries. The city's permitting director signed the zoning form on October 3. The state Division of Cannabis Control did not yet show a King City license in Richland County, and the company expected a provisional license within a week, then a certificate of operation.

“plans to open after some minor cosmetic and branding changes”

Mansfield's first dispensary had opened in April 2025. The Garden would be the second.
