Edibles 101: Dosing, Timing & Best Practices

Learn the golden rules of cannabis edibles: start low, go slow, understand onset times, and discover different gourmet chew formats.

Cannabis edibles, including gummies, chocolates and infused beverages, are incredibly popular because they are smoke-free, discreet, and offer long-lasting effects. However, because your digestive system processes cannabinoids differently than your lungs, edibles require a unique set of guidelines.

1. The Golden Rule: Start Low, Go Slow

If you have never consumed an edible, or haven’t in a long time, the absolute most important guideline is to start with a very low dose.

  • Recommended Starting Dose: 2.5mg to 5mg of THC.
  • Most gummies come in 10mg servings. Use a clean knife to cut a 10mg gummy in half or into quarters to start with a safe, mild dose.
  • Do not take more because you "don't feel anything" yet.

2. Understanding Onset Times (The Waiting Game)

When you smoke or vape, you feel the effects almost instantly. Edibles are a completely different story.

  • Inhalation Onset: 1 to 5 minutes.
  • Edible Onset: 45 minutes to 2 hours.
  • Because the THC must travel through your stomach and be processed by your liver, it takes time to enter your bloodstream. Taking a second dose too early is the #1 mistake first-timers make. Always wait at least 2 full hours before considering taking more.

3. Different Edible Formats

  • Gummies & Fruit Chews: The classic option. Long-lasting, delicious, and easy to divide into precise doses.
  • Fast-Acting Edibles: Formulated with nano-emulsified cannabinoids that bypass deep digestion, often taking effect in just 15 to 30 minutes.
  • Beverages: Infused seltzers and sodas. They offer a highly social, fast-acting alternative to traditional alcohol, with effects typically setting in within 20 to 30 minutes.
